We were lucky to end our Finnish adventure with a trip to Lapland with the ESN society. The trip started with an overnight bus from Turku to Rovaniemi, where we visited the Santa Claus Village. The first thing we all did was go straight to see Santa to let him know what we all wanted for Christmas.
After getting our photo with Santa we went straight to the husky farm and were able to play with them for the afternoon. We even got to see a 2 week old pup. Michael loved meeting his favourite animal!
After a quick stop to get some Gloggi we were back on the bus heading towards Kilpisjarvi. We spent our first day in Kilpisjarvi walking around in the snow, sledging and getting good pictures. The lake was frozen over enough to walk on it which was great fun, especially when we got over to an island with lots of really deep snow!
That night Ben put on his kilt and we all headed Aurora hunting. Sadly we did not see the aurora but we had a great night trying to explain Bens outfit to everyone.
The next morning we went to Tromsø in Norway. The drive was very pretty and we were all very happy seeing mountains again - something we didn't realise how much we missed! Once arriving in the city we were all amazed by how pretty it was and headed straight to the gondola to take us to the top of the hill.
On the drive home we stopped off at the Artic ocean for a sauna and a swim. This was a cool thing to tick off the bucket list!
Our final day was spent relaxing in Kilpisjarvi during the day and doing some shopping for our secret santa presents. That night we all headed on a snowshoe hike and a BBQ. The snowshoeing was great fun as we had navigate around to try and find the things we needed to make a fire. Once we had got all our items we headed back to the fire pit to enjoy some hotdogs and toasted marshmallows.
The next day we had an early start to head back to Turku. On the way home we stopped off in Levi where we tried some reindeer burgers and got some more shopping done.
We all loved our trip and all hope to go back - maybe try cross country skiing next time!
